The Universidad Autónoma de Occidente is an institution of higher education private non-profit organization founded in 1970, with influence in southwestern Colombia and axle coffee in the departments of Valle de Cauca, Cauca, Nariño, Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío. The University is an institution that is accredited high quality, according to Resolution No. 16740 of the Ministry of National Education, August 24 of 2017, effective until 2021 and is certified ISO 14001:2004.

Considering that the University can and must help to change the way of thinking in pro of the reasonable use of natural resources to build sustainable cities and regions, from the academic and research environment, it has raised the Sustainable Campus Program of the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente. This program´s main objective is to articulate and potentiate academic activities, research and social projection that by the support of the internal operation, promote commitment and environmental and social responsibility. In this context the University promotes the development of research projects for the benefit of the environment to reduce climate change as the theme of the use of renewable energy, efficiency and saving energy and water, and improving the quality of local air. In this way the University is betting not only to train people to be competent professionals in their areas but also that environmental responsibility becomes part of their lives.

 

The University has the largest photovoltaic system installed on a university campus in Colombia. It has its own treatment plant, potable water and wastewater treatment, a robust system of solid waste management, green areas with organic gardening and performs recurring campaigns for the rational use of energy and water. The University was the winner of the 3rd Prize for Best Management Practices, Awarded to Colombian universities on behalf of the OCU International Foundation based in Spain. It was the winner of the Environmental Protection Award of Caracol Television in 2016 and is the institution of higher education more sustainable Colombia, according to UI Green Metric Ranking of Word University in 2018, in which it stands as the third in Latin America and number 43 worldwide.

 

The University has 12 accredited programs and 2 reaccreditation process for high quality, awarded by the National Council for Accreditation, CNA; as well as two international certification programs. The academic organization of the University is conformed by five faculties: Engineering, Social Communication, Economics and Administrative Sciences; Basic Sciences and Humanities, with 20 undergraduate programs, 23 graduate programs and 7 technological undergraduate or technologies.

The Universidad de San Buenaventura Cali was Created on 24 August 1970, began academic work with the programs of Law, Education and Accounting, at the Convento San Joaquin known as the Convent of San Francisco and from 1980 moved to Umbria, to the south of the city of Cali to a campus of 260,200 square meters that has tennis, football, basketball and volleyball fields, Olympic swimming pool, parking, modern technological infrastructure and more than 85,000 square meters of buildings for the academy including an extensive library, high-tech laboratories for engineering and design workshops, Mac Room multimedia, video lab, research lab, creativity laboratory, microcomputers rooms and comfortable classrooms.

The university has the Institutional Multicampus accreditation of High Quality for its headquarters in Bogota and three (3) Sectionals in Cali, Medellin and Cartagena, under Resolution # 10706 of the Ministry of National Education since May 25, 2017. It received certification of “Pioneering Carbon Neutral University” under the Seal Carbon Neutral Organizational created by DAGMA in partnership with CVC and supported by the ICONTEC, GAIA and More Forests BanCO2 Group.

His new laboratory building “Naranjos”, was built on the principles of bioclimatic architecture where environmental sustainability is based on three key aspects: climate, optimal use of natural resources and the search for use of recycled materials or low energy expenditure. It is also the first university in the southwestern region of Colombia with a Technological Park where students can gain practical experience, develop their research, ideas of entrepreneurship and new businesses. The park has four smart towers equipped with the most modern technology that allows students to live their entrepreneurship and research processes.

The academic organization of the university is formed by six faculties: Architecture, Art and Design; Economics and Management Science; Law and political science; Education, Engineering and Psychology, with 16 degree programs. Likewise it has a wide range of doctorates, master’s degrees, majors and graduates in different areas of knowledge, which guarantees its graduates and the general public updated and further progress in different fields of their professional development.
